According to Stan Grof, "Non-ordinary states of consciousness are characterized by dramatic perceptual changes, intense and often unusual emotions, profound alterations in the thought processes and behavior, and by a variety of psychosomatic manifestations."
Throughout history and across cultural contexts, altered states have been an avenue for understanding self and healing the psyche. Non-ordinary states of consciousness may be induced via hypnosis, breathwork, repetition (such as drumming, rattling, and various movement practices), or by ingesting psychedelic substances.
